Camillo Placi for Volleyweek: Bulgaria has the potential to move forward and achieve significant results

Camillo, congratulations on qualifying for the round of sixteen! You were a coach in Bulgaria, so I can't help but ask – what is your assessment of the current Bulgarian team? Have you watched their matches?
– Of course. I watched Bulgaria's matches because I was the national team's coach for six years and coach of Hebar Pazardzhik for two years. I feel half Bulgarian! I love Bulgaria very much! This is a young squad, the youngest at the World Championship, with many individual qualities. They are well led by Kiko Blengini and his entire staff. I see that this team has the potential to move forward and achieve significant results.

– One of your players – Ben Tahir – played in Bulgaria. Did his career abroad help him to be more useful for your group?
– Yes, certainly. He changed quite a bit. For example, he didn't execute a good serve before, but now he does. We worked a lot on block and attack. The experience in the Bulgarian championship is valuable, but what helps him most is that he has also gained national experience – that's how he grows technically and tactically.

– And how do you assess your team's matches played and the tournament as a whole?
– Our group was difficult for our level. Against the Philippines, we played a very good first match, which, however, was not easy. Then a strange situation occurred – Iran played poorly against Egypt and lost, and that's a team of a different level. However, we managed to take advantage and get three points from Egypt. We finished first in the group. Now we are waiting to see our opponent from the other side, so we know how to prepare.

– Is this the first time Tunisia has advanced from the group stage at a World Championship?
– If I'm not mistaken, this has happened once before.

– How will you prepare for the next match?
– Tomorrow I will give half a day off, and in the evening, we will have a weight training session. After that, we will wait to find out our opponent – it could be Brazil or Serbia. We will have four days to prepare. That is enough time.

– How far does Camillo Placi's dream extend in this tournament?
– We have already qualified, and that in itself is a success. But I think we should dream for something bigger, something greater. I am 69 years old – these are my last laps in the volleyball world. I want to leave a good result with this team.

– Good luck.
– Thank you. Thank you very much (the second 'thank you' Placi said in pure Bulgarian).
