The Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) is facing serious financial pressure after it became clear that it still needs to account for and settle funds amounting to 662 million Philippine pesos (over 9 million euros) from the organization of the 2025 Men's World Championship. Bulgaria won a silver medal at the World Cup in Pasay City.
The information comes from the local publicationAbante, with the data already confirmed by the legal department of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC). As of April 21, 2026, the said amount remains unsettled and is subject to audit and approval by both the PSC and the Commission on Audit (COA).
For the organization of the championship, the Philippines invested nearly 2 billion pesos (about 33.5 million dollars), which makes the financial imbalance even more serious given the remaining obligations.
The World Championship was historic for the country, but even during its staging, doubts arose regarding the effectiveness of the organization – primarily due to low attendance and high ticket prices.
Another issue is added to the financial irregularities – an unresolved dispute over remuneration with the former coach of the women's national team, Jorge de Brito.
Philippine Sports Commission Chairman John Patrick Gregorio has already urged the federation to urgently resolve both the financial accounts and contractual disputes, warning of serious consequences.
The accumulated problems could prove to be a serious blow to the country's international image. The Philippines has already been designated to host the 2029 Women's World Championship, but the current situation casts doubt on their ability to organize a tournament of such scale without new financial upheavals.
If the obligations are not settled within a short period, the country risks not only losing trust in the volleyball community but also facing serious difficulties in attracting foreign specialists and future major events.
