Qatar champions Al Arabi, whose squad includes former Bulgarian youth international Borislav Georgiev, continue without losing a set in the new championship. The Doha team defeated Al Gharafa 3:0 (25:22, 25:17, 25:18) in a match from the third week of the 2026/27 season.
The match took place on November 1st at the Qatar Volleyball Association hall. The most contested was the first set, won by Al Arabi with 25:22. In the next two parts, the champions had a significantly greater advantage and closed the match after 25:17 and 25:18.
This is Al Arabi's second victory since the start of the season. At the championship's opening, on October 21st, the team also won 3:0 (25:21, 25:19, 25:21) against Al Sadd. Thus, after their first two matches, the champions have a full asset of 6 points and a set ratio of 6:0.
Borislav Georgiev – from the Bulgarian youth national team to historical success with Qatar
34-year-old Borislav Georgiev is one of the Bulgarian volleyball players with the longest career in the Qatari championship. The setter is a silver medalist with Bulgaria from the European Youth Championship in 2010, and in recent years has also defended the colors of the Qatar national team.
In March 2026, Georgiev won the fifth championship title of his career with Al Arabi after a dramatic outcome in the last round of the local championship.
In 2025, the Bulgarian participated in the World Championship in the Philippines, where Qatar achieved its historic first victory in a world final. This happened against Romania after a 3:1 (20:25, 25:23, 25:20, 25:22) success.
However, Georgiev missed the international season in 2026 due to a leg injury that required a long recovery.
Now Al Arabi begins its title defense in a championship with changed regulations, which provide for playoffs after the regular season. The first two results show that the champions will again be among the main contenders for the gold medals.
