Led by Jalen Phillips' record-breaking 34 points, the No. 9-ranked Northridge CSUN team achieved a dramatic 3-2 comeback from 0-2 down against No. 10 UC San Diego in a Big West conference match played at LionTree Arena. With the victory,21-25, 22-25, 25-23, 39-37, 15-11the Matadors improved their overall record to 18-8 (3-5 in Big West) and won the seasonal series against the Tritons for the first time since 2019.
Strong match for Stiliyan Delibosov:The Bulgarian center played a very strong match and contributed significantly to the comeback. He finished with17 points - 13 points from attackachieved withan impressive 52.2% efficiencyafter 23 attempts. Delibov also added4 blocksparticipating in key plays at the net, including an important block at the end of the third set and a decisive block in the tie-break that gave the Matadors a 9:6 lead.
Phillips and Constable's Record: Despite Delibov's strong play, sophomore Jalen Phillips was outstanding, setting a new personal record with 34 points (with 40% efficiency and 65 attacks). He scored 26 of his points in the last three decisive sets, including 13 in the epic fourth set (39-37). Setter Donovan Constable also set a personal record with 62 assists. As a team, CSUN finished with 32.5% attack efficiency, and their 73 attack points, 154 attempts, 70 assists, and 57 digs were season bests.
The Matadors conclude the regular season with two matches against No. 5 UC Irvine later this week.
