Japan started the VNL with a clean win over Ukraine

The Japanese national team avoided an upset and began its participation in the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) with a dominant 3:0 (25:22, 25:21, 25:22) victory over Ukraine in a match from the first week of the tournament in Linyi, China.
The Ukrainians played without their big star Oleh Plotnytskyi, who is still awaiting his passport renewal and was not available to the coach. The absence of the team's captain and main scorer was especially felt in the key moments of the match, when the Japanese demonstrated greater stability and effectiveness.
The Japanese squad was better in reception and capitalized maximally on the opponent's errors. The Asians finished with 50% positive reception against 34% for Ukraine, and also won 27 points from Ukrainian errors compared to just 12 for the opponent.

Japan was inferior in blocking (5 against 10) but compensated with much more stable reception and a significantly lower number of their own errors. The 15-point difference, coming from inaccuracies by the Ukrainian team, proved to be one of the factors for the final outcome of the match.
The top scorer for Ukraine was Dmytro Yanchuk with 18 points, and Tupchii added another 10. For Japan, Ran Takahashi scored 12 points, while Yuji Nishida finished with 13 points.
In defense, the Japanese also had an advantage with 53 digs against 41 for the Ukrainians, which allowed them to more frequently organize successful counterattacks.
Following this result, there were no changes in the world rankings. Japan remains in 7th place with 294.77 points, and Ukraine maintains its 18th position with 202.85 points.
