Reversal: Savitsky's penalty was cancelled, he again becomes a teammate of Alex Grozdanov

After twelve months under pressure, Mikołaj Sawicki has been granted the right to return to training and official matches. This was announced today by Polish media, citing a publication and interview on the TVP Sport website, where journalist Sara Kalisz spoke with the head of the Polish Anti-Doping Agency (POLADA), Michał Rynkowski, regarding Mikołaj Sawicki's case.

The Polish Anti-Doping Agency (POLADA) lifted his provisional suspension after the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) annulled the initial laboratory result. Thus, Alex Grozdanov's teammate emerges from the most difficult period of his career, but questions surrounding the case remain.

From championship euphoria to suspension

The sanction came at an extremely sensitive moment – immediately after winning the title with BOGDANKA LUK Lublin and at the start of the international season. For the 26-year-old outside hitter, this meant an abrupt halt to the upward trajectory of his career.

Such cases are rare in Polish volleyball. In recent years, isolated incidents can be cited – a suspension for Kamila Witkowska for canrenone and a three-month sanction for Jakub Rączka in 2018 for methylhexanamine. However, the annulment of a laboratory result in a Polish anti-doping laboratory has not occurred until now.

The Breakthrough: Contested Procedure

As early as autumn, Sawicki publicly stated that he had never knowingly taken prohibited substances. In January, he exercised his right to challenge the analytical procedure. This action precisely triggered the subsequent turn of events.

On March 2, POLADA officially lifted his provisional suspension. The decision is described as unprecedented for the Polish system, as it is the first time a laboratory analysis result has been annulled by WADA's decision.

Where is the mistake?

POLADA admits that the initial result was incorrect, but the specific grounds for its annulment are within the competence of WADA and the respective laboratory. There is no information that the doubts affect other samples related to the same substance – modafinil.

However, the case is not yet formally closed. Further analysis of the sample is pending, after which the proceedings will be definitively concluded, and it will be unequivocally established whether a prohibited substance is present in it or not.

Is compensation possible?

The most crucial question concerns the lost year of the athlete's career. During a period when a volleyball player is at their peak age, such an absence can hardly be compensated for athletically.

POLADA management confirms that after the definitive conclusion of the procedure, Sawicki will have the right to claim compensation.

Consequences Beyond the Individual Case

For Sawicki himself, the most important thing is that he can once again be on the court alongside his teammates, including Alex Grozdanov. For the system, however, the serious question remains regarding the reliability of laboratory analyses and the protection of athletes in such situations.

A year out of the game cannot be regained. But WADA's decision sets an important precedent – that even the anti-doping system is not immune to errors and that an athlete has the right to seek justice to the very end.
