The opposition to the calendar proposed by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) for the period 2028–2032 is entering a new phase.Following protests by leading European clubs, the men's and women's professional leagues in Italy joined forces with the Italian Volleyball Players' Association and issued a joint declaration under the motto "No clubs, no players, no volleyball."
In the joint statement of November 6, Lega Pallavolo Serie A, Lega Volley Femminile, and Associazione Italiana Pallavolisti unequivocally oppose the FIVB's proposal, warning of serious risks to both the physical and mental health of the players and the economic sustainability of professional volleyball.
Three main reasons for dissatisfaction
According to the three organizations, the new calendar does not solve the main problem – national championships continue to be limited to just seven months. Instead of providing more time for club competitions, the FIVB proposes a redistribution of commitments between national teams and clubs, which, according to the Italians, could further complicate the situation.
The first serious objection is related to the workload of the volleyball players. More matches, a more condensed schedule, and periods of extremely high intensity are expected, which will limit recovery opportunities.
The second problem is the planned interruption of national championships between December and January. This is one of the most important periods for clubs in terms of attendance, TV rights, sponsorship deals, and fan interest.
The third objection is that instead of extending the club season, the proposal further disrupts its continuity and reduces the value of national championships.
From club protest to a common position of professional volleyball
The new declaration follows a series of public criticisms against the FIVB, among whose most active representatives is Perugia president Gino Sirci. In the opposing camp stood the president of the Polish Volleyball Federation, Sebastian Świderski, who supported the idea of changes to the international calendar.
The significant difference from previous protests is the inclusion of the organization representing the volleyball players themselves. Thus, the opposition is no longer limited to the interests of clubs and professional leagues but officially raises the issue of players' health and working conditions.
The change in the campaign slogan is also indicative. To the previous "No clubs, no volleyball" has now been added "No players."
"Volleyball needs a sustainable calendar that adds value to national championships, protects players, and recognizes the central role of clubs. Any international reform must start from one undeniable condition, shared by leagues and players: because without clubs and without volleyball players, there can be no volleyball," concludes the joint declaration.
With their common position, the three Italian organizations are increasing pressure on the FIVB at a time when the future of the international calendar continues to cause serious disagreements between national federations, professional leagues, and clubs.
