Canada fired Dan Lewis

The Canadian Volleyball Federation announced the dismissal of men's national team coach Dan Lewis after two years at the helm. The decision comes after a difficult season, marked by relegation from the Nations League and a missed direct Olympic quota for Los Angeles 2028.
In the official announcement, the federation did not specify the exact reasons for the separation. Sports director Kerri MacDonald thanked the specialist for his long-standing contribution to the development of Canadian volleyball.

The FIVB regulations influenced the 'Maple Leafs'' relegation from the VNL

Canada finished the preliminary phase of VNL 2026 in 17th place with one win, 11 losses, and 10 points. Their only success came against Olympic champions France with a 3:1 victory. Interestingly, seven of their defeats were after a tie-break – an indicator that the Canadians were often close to success but failed to close out matches.
Despite their poor performance, Canada was not last. China finished in 18th position, also with one win, but only 4 points.
This is where the controversial regulations of FIVB and Volleyball World come into play. China received guaranteed participation in the final eight as hosts of the tournament in Ningbo, regardless of their last place in the preliminary standings. After losing in the quarterfinals, the Chinese finished the season eighth, while Canada ended up last in the final standings and was relegated from the Nations League.
This happened for the second consecutive year, with China hosting the finals. In 2025, the Asian team finished 17th in the preliminary phase but again secured a spot among the top eight.
China's privilege directly affected Bulgaria as well. Our national team finished eighth in the preliminary phase of VNL 2026 with seven wins and 20 points, but remained outside the final tournament precisely because of the hosts' guaranteed spot. Thus, Bulgaria finished ninth in the final standings.
A paradoxical situation arises: last-place China in the preliminary phase finished eighth, eighth-place Bulgaria remained ninth, and 17th-place Canada lost its spot for next season.

Bulgaria also contributed to Canada's difficult season

On June 27 in Ljubljana, the Bulgarian national team defeated Canada 3:2 (25:27, 25:22, 21:25, 25:18, 15:11), inflicting one of the North Americans' seven tie-break defeats.
Alexander Nikolov finished with 25 points, and Simeon Nikolov scored five aces. The Canadians twice took the lead in sets, but Bulgaria managed to turn the tide of the match, starting the decisive set with a 4:0 run.

The final blow to Canada's survival in the Nations League came on July 18 in Osaka. Cuba won the direct clash 3:0 (25:22, 25:21, 29:27) and secured an advantage in the battle to remain in the tournament.

Cuba also delivered the second decisive blow

Two months later, the Canadians missed the opportunity to secure a direct Olympic quota, and that too in front of their home crowd.
On September 19 in Moncton, Cuba defeated Canada 3:1 (25:21, 25:23, 23:25, 25:22) in the final of the NORCECA Olympic qualifier and secured their participation in the Los Angeles Games.
Interestingly, only four days earlier, Canada had defeated the same opponent 3:0 in the semi-final of the continental championship. However, in the decisive Olympic qualifier, the Cubans took their revenge.
The loss does not mean Canada's definitive elimination from the Olympic competition. The team has already qualified for the 2027 World Cup in Poland, where three more quotas will be awarded. The last three spots for Los Angeles will be determined through the world rankings after the preliminary phase of VNL 2028.

Who will succeed Dan Lewis?

As of November 6, the Canadian federation has not announced a successor to Dan Lewis, and no reliably confirmed candidacy stands out in verified publications by Canadian, Polish, Italian, and international specialized media. The federation only specifies that information about future appointments will be published additionally.
Lewis continues his club career at the helm of French Poitiers, with whom he is contracted until the end of the 2028/29 season.
The Canadian national team is scheduled to resume its training in the spring of 2027 at its new training base in Toronto.
The upcoming appointment will be important not only for the team's results but also for restoring its position in international volleyball. And the case of relegation from the VNL leaves a question that goes far beyond Dan Lewis's responsibility \u2014 how fair is it for host status to carry more weight than on-court results?
