Australia is the first semi-finalist at the men's Asian Championship in Fukuoka. The "Kangaroos" stopped one of the best-performing teams in the group stage – Thailand, after a decisive 3:0 (25:22, 26:24, 25:19) in the quarter-final.
Thailand reached the eliminations undefeated, but Australia showed a completely different face in the decisive match. The first set was relatively even before the Australians closed it at 25:22. The second set proved crucial, in which Thailand had the opportunity to equalize, but Australia snatched the set 26:24. In the third set, the Australians already controlled the situation and finished the match at 25:19.
Statistics clearly show where Australia built its advantage. The difference in attack was minimal – 43:41 points, but in blocking, the Australians dominated with 10:4. Thailand finished with 5 aces against 4 for their opponent, while Australia received 19 points from Thai errors against 15 in the opposite direction.
In defense, the two teams were almost equal – 39:38 saved balls in defense for Thailand. It was Australia's six more blocks that became one of the clearest statistical indicators of the difference between the two teams.
The big figure for the winners was Lorenzo Pope. The Australian outside hitter finished with 17 points, the most in the match. Williams added 15. For Thailand, Thanat scored 15, and Napadet – 13 points.
Pope is well-known in European volleyball. In the 2025/26 season, he defended the colors of the Ukrainian Barkom-Kazhany Lviv in the Polish PlusLiga, where he finished the season with 251 points – 213 from attack, 22 in blocking, and 16 aces.
The Australian remains in the Polish championship for the 2026/27 season as well. He is part of the Jastrzębie Barkom squad – Barkom's new project in Jastrzębie-Zdrój, and is among the outside hitters on the team.
The victory also significantly affected the world ranking. Australia added 9.22 points and climbed five positions to No. 37, while Thailand lost 9.22 points and dropped four places to No. 52.
In the semi-final, Australia will meet the winner of Iran vs. Chinese Taipei. In the other half of the bracket are the quarter-finals Japan vs. India and South Korea vs. China.
The Australians are now among the last four teams on the continent and remain in the battle for the grand prize – the Asian title and a direct Olympic quota for Los Angeles 2028.
