Serbia shocks Argentina at the start of the VNL, climbs in the world rankings

Brazil. Another surprise marked the first day of the first week of the Volleyball Nations League in Brazil. Following Bulgaria's unexpected loss to debutant Belgium, this time favorite Argentina conceded to Serbia's rejuvenated squad with a score of 1:3 (23:25, 20:25, 27:25, 24:26).
The success brought valuable points to our western neighbors for the world ranking, climbing them to 12th place in the FIVB standings, while the Argentinians remained eighth.
The match also held special significance for Bulgaria, as our national team will play its last match of the first VNL tournament precisely against Serbia.

Serbia imposed an aggressive style

Gheorghe Crețu's team started very confidently. The Serbs served strongly and risked, attacked effectively, and showed good organization in blocking. Setter Batak excellently managed the game and found diverse solutions in offense.
At the heart of the success was opposite hitter Veljko Mašulović, who led the team with 19 points. He received excellent support from Marinović, who scored 13 points.
Argentina only managed to get back into the match at the end of the third set. The South Americans saved three match points and snatched the set 27:25, extending the intrigue.
In the fourth set, however, the young Serbian squad withstood the pressure and closed the match 26:24, securing a prestigious victory against one of their traditionally challenging opponents.

Team Statistics

Indicator Serbia Argentina

The main difference came from Argentina's errors. Serbia scored a total of 45 points after opponent's inaccuracies compared to just 29 for Argentina. Although the South Americans had an advantage in attack (53:45) and serving (5:2 aces), the Serbian block and significantly more disciplined play tipped the scales in their favor.

Individual Statistics

Serbia Points Argentina Points
Velko Mashulovich 19 Visentin 17
Marinovic 13 Diaz 14

Mashulovich was the top scorer for the winners and the main weapon in key moments. For Argentina, Visentin and Diaz tried to keep the team in the game, but it wasn't enough against the inspired Serbs.

Additional statistics

Indicator Serbia Argentina
Defensive saves 69 71
Reception 66 80
Distributed balls 110 127

Argentina had superiority in defensive elements and reception but failed to convert it into enough direct points. Serbia compensated with greater aggression in crucial rallies and significantly better use of their chances after opponent errors.
The victory is a serious signal that the rejuvenated Serbian squad could be one of the pleasant surprises in the VNL this season, and for Bulgaria, it is a warning before the direct clash with our western neighbors.
