Belgium national team captain Sam Deroo has officially parted ways with Russian club Lokomotiv Novosibirsk, the club announced on its website.
The Belgian outside hitter spent one season with the team, winning bronze medals in the Russian Championship and the Russian Cup tournament. During the season, Deroo played 18 matches in the Russian Superliga and scored 141 points.
Lokomotiv sent an emotional message to the volleyball player:
"Together we went through a difficult season, but undoubtedly we became stronger. We wish Sam all the best – robust health, family happiness, and many new victories. The Lokomotiv family is forever! We love you, Sam, and we will always be with you!"
The parting comes after an extremely difficult season for the Belgian, who returned to professional volleyball after treatment for an oncological disease. In late May, Deroo revealed to Belgian media outlet Sporza that he feels excellent and no longer needs therapy.
"Everything is going well. I have check-ups every three months and no longer need treatment. I feel great," stated the captain of the "Red Dragons."
He explained that he would not join the national team at the start of the season, as he needs rest after a demanding club campaign, and is also expecting the birth of a child with former Bulgarian national team player Dobriana Rabadzhieva in the coming weeks.

"I needed to rest after the season. My partner and I are expecting a baby next month, so priorities are a bit different right now," Deroo said.
This means that the star outside hitter will not be in Belgium's squad for the start of the Volleyball Nations League, including the match against Bulgaria on June 10.
Deroo himself, however, did not rule out the possibility of joining the national team later in the tournament but emphasized that his main goal is the European Championship.
"Unless the team is performing very well and doesn't need me, then I will join directly in preparation for the European Championship. I will definitely play in that tournament," the Belgian captain stated.
Meanwhile, the question remains open as to where the Belgian international will continue his club career after parting ways with Lokomotiv Novosibirsk.
