Bulgarian international Samuil Valchinov will continue his career in Greece in the new season, it was learned byvolleyweek.bgThe outside hitter will play for Foinikas Syros, marking another stage in his development abroad.
Valchinov comes to Syros island after a spell in Ravenna, where in the 2025/26 season he defended the colors of Porto Robur Costa. Before that, he also played for Banca Macerata, and in Bulgaria he wore the jerseys of Montana, Deia Volley, and Levski, from where he moved into men's volleyball.
The transfer to Greece comes at the right time for the 24-year-old player. After two seasons in Italy, in which he gained experience, a different challenge now lies ahead of him – to be one of the key players in a team that needs stabilization.
Foinikas Syros had a difficult 2025/26 season, in which they found themselves in the lower part of the standings and had to fight to stay in the elite league. The team showed inconsistencies throughout the year, especially in reception and consistency in attack – precisely the areas where Valchinov is expected to add value.
The Greek championship rarely offers the glamor of the leading European leagues, but compensates with a tough atmosphere, especially in the halls of island teams. Syros is one of those places – a small, but exceptionally volleyball-centric hub, where home advantage often tips the scales.
From the perspective of the national team, this transfer is also significant. Valchinov is part of Bulgaria's extended squad, and a season in which he gains more responsibility and rhythm could prove crucial for his establishment at a higher level. The move to Foinikas seems pragmatic – neither a step back nor a sensational leap forward, but an opportunity for development where he will have a role. It is often in such transfers that real progress lies.
In the new season, Valchinov will be in the same championship with another Bulgarian international – Martin Atanasov, who will play for Olympiacos.
