VC Neftochimik 2010 concluded its European participation after losing the return match of the Challenge Cup round of 16 to SC Ankara. Ivan Stanev's team lost 1:3 (-19, -23, 20, -17), although they tried to fight one of the best Turkish teams in the capital of our southeastern neighbor.
The team from Burgas lost 0:3 in the first match last week at "Arena Burgas".
The most points for VC Neftochimik 2010 were scored by captain Axel Truhtchev with 12 points, and the top scorer of the match was the Cuban from the home team, Salvador Hidalgo – 17.
The match started point for point until 3:3, and then the hosts pulled ahead 5:3 after two successful blocks by Mustafa Cengiz. After that, it became 7:4 after an ace by the bronze Olympic medalist with the USA, Garrett Muagututia.
From 11:8, the Turkish team scored 4 unanswered points to make it 15:9. Subsequently, it became 19:15. Thus, SC Ankara had no problems winning the first game 25:19.
The top scorer of this part was VC Neftochimik 2010's Polish opposite, Rafał Faryna, with 5 points.
In the second game, Ivan Stanev's team was far more evenly matched with their opponent. SC Ankara pulled ahead 12:10, but the "Neftochimics" equalized and a point-for-point chase began again.
The Burgas team held on until 21:21, when the hosts delivered their blow – 23:21, to ultimately win this game 25:23. Everything was decided here – SC Ankara was already in the round of 16 in Europe.
In the third set, VC Neftochimik 2010 performed even better, at one point even pulling away 18:15 after an attack by Rozalin Penchev. SC Ankara, however, managed to equalize – 18:18.
But then we recorded a series of five unanswered points – 23:18, to win one game 25:20.
In the fourth set, SC Ankara's team pulled ahead early – 9:2, and seemingly decided everything in the match itself, having already secured qualification.
Then the score became 15:5, and 20:12. SC Ankara set the final score in the set at 25:15 for a 3:1 set victory.
