Fabio Azevedo takes over FIVB, Hugh McCutcheon, who led USA to gold in Beijing, became Secretary General

The 39th FIVB World Congress today unanimously elected Fabio Azevedo as the new President of FIVB, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the global volleyball community. With the strong support of international volleyball delegates, Fabio Azevedo will lead the organization for the next eight years, building on the impressive progress achieved under the leadership of his predecessor, Dr. Ary S. Graça.
Before the elections, Fabio Azevedo presented his Strategic Vision 2024-2032, promising to lead volleyball into its next phase by further raising professional standards in the sport, expanding its reach among practitioners and fans worldwide, with the goal of doubling the current global fanbase of 800 million people. This will be achieved through enhanced engagement and empowerment initiatives for the Global Volleyball Movement.
Fabio Azevedo stated: "I am honored, humbled, and grateful to be elected to serve the Global Volleyball Movement for the next eight years. Over the past 12 years, volleyball has experienced remarkable growth, development, and modernization worldwide, and we have an opportunity to build on very solid foundations. "With the support of the international volleyball community, I am ready to lead volleyball into its next phase through the Strategic Vision 2024-2032, guided by the motto 'Together as One' and the key pillars of professionalism, integration, empowerment, and mass participation."

Following his inauguration, Fabio Azevedo announced that New Zealander Hugh McCutcheon, who has served as a senior advisor to FIVB for several years, will assume the role of FIVB Secretary General. McCutcheon began his journey in volleyball as a player before moving into coaching, where he notably led the US Men's National Team to gold at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and then guided the US Women's National Team to a silver medal in London 2012.
Hugh McCutcheon stated: "Truly excited to be taking on this new role at FIVB. From player to coach, to sports administrator both within the global FIVB and the US collegiate arena, and now stepping into this position, I feel privileged to continue contributing to the sport I love in new, meaningful ways. This moment feels both surreal and deeply satisfying, and I am grateful to be part of a journey that will help shape the sport's next chapter."
