Karch Kiraly will be the new head coach of the U.S. men's national team for the home Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028, it was announced today. Kiraly takes over from John Speraw, who was appointed President and CEO of USA Volleyball on October 1. Speraw was the men's national team head coach for 12 years.
"I'm excited that the winningest coach in USA Volleyball will move from the women's team to lead the U.S. men in LA 2028," Speraw said. "I have complete faith in Karch's abilities. He has a relentless work ethic, a brilliant intellect, and is a selfless teacher."
Kiraly takes over the U.S. men's national team after serving as head coach for the women's national team since September 2012. Most recently, he led the U.S. women to a silver medal at the Paris Olympic Games. In 2021, he helped the U.S. win its first Olympic gold medal in Tokyo. He also coached the team to an Olympic bronze medal in Rio in 2016 and to its first World Championship victory in 2014.
"For a quarter of my life, I have poured everything I have into the U.S. women's team; first as an assistant, and then as head coach. Now it's time for new adventures and new challenges," Kiraly said.
The U.S. Women's National Team won three Volleyball Nations League trophies (2018, '19, and '21) and the Grand Prix in 2015 under Kiraly's leadership, who amassed a 327-81 win/loss record in his 12 years as head coach. Before becoming head coach, he served as an assistant coach for four years under Hugh McCutcheon and helped the U.S. women win the Olympic silver medal in 2012.
Kiraly takes over the U.S. men's team, which won the bronze medal at the Paris Olympic Games under John Speraw and is ranked number 3 in the world.
Kiraly is considered one of the greatest volleyball players of all time. He is a two-time Olympic gold medalist in indoor volleyball (1984, 1988) and once in beach volleyball (1996).
He was named the greatest volleyball player of the 20th century by FIVB and has been inducted into several halls of fame, including the International Volleyball Hall of Fame (2001), the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Hall of Fame (2008), and the UCLA Hall of Fame (1992).
"All of us at USA Volleyball recognize that our benchmark for success in the sport came when Karch led the U.S. team to a gold medal in 1984," Speraw said. "I think it's fitting that when Karch steps onto the court at the Los Angeles Olympics, he will compete with the men's team one more time."]}```
