After it became clear that Ivan Stanev has been selected as coach for the U17 men's team, volleyweek.bgcontacted him for a first comment:
– Mr. Stanev, a new challenge – how do you approach working with U17?
– For me, it's a new mission. It will be interesting for me to work with this age group – under 17. I know many of the boys, as when I decided to participate in the competition, I met some of them – players from the previous squad who have already grown up.
– What do you think about this generation?
– This is the age group that needs to take a step forward. The World Championship group is tough, but at this age, everything is still developing, and nothing is predetermined.
– How will the preparation proceed during the summer?
– The idea is to have two preparatory camps. The second will be the main one, focused on the World Championship. Before that, there's the Balkan Championship, which is about a week earlier.
– Where will the team prepare?
– What is clear so far is that the second stage of preparation will be in Stara Zagora. For the first stage, there is no specific location yet – options are being discussed. There needs to be a good hall, hotel, gym, and everything necessary, because initially, the focus will be more on physical preparation.
– When is the first gathering expected?
– We are talking about mid-June, but there might be changes.
– The Balkan Championship and the World Championship are very close to each other. Is this a problem?
– No, on the contrary. The Balkan Championship comes about 7–8 days before the World Championship, and this can be a very good part of the preparation.
– Will you look for friendly matches?
– Yes, we will look for friendly matches before the Balkan Championship to prepare the team as best as possible.
– How will you approach working with this age group?
– It's important to build a connection with the boys. It's not just about tactics – you need to put them at ease, to make them listen to you. I will give my all to make this happen.
– How important is the staff around you?
– A lot. I have ideas for a staff. It's important that my assistant knows this age group, even better than I do.
– Are there already concrete discussions?
– Yes, I have had discussions. I have spoken with Martin Penev and he confirmed that he wishes to work with me as an assistant. But we will wait for the official formalization.
– How will you choose the squad?
– The most important thing is to select the best. I will not be a slave to names – whoever deserves it will be in the national team. I will also attend the finals at this age group (cadets, ed. note) to observe the players.
– What are the expectations for the team?
– At this age, it's hard to make predictions. There are two pitches and one ball – anything is possible.
– Why did you accept this challenge?
– I wanted to try. This is a new stage in my development as a coach. Thank you for the trust, and I will give my best.
