A true drama unfolded in Group E of the Volleyball Champions League, where the battle for second place continued until the final sets. Montpellier managed to overtake PGE Project Warsaw literally on the home stretch and secured direct qualification for the playoffs.
The French team, who were without Nikolay Kъrtev in their squad, made no mistake in the final round and recorded a clear victory against underdog Volley Haasrode Leuven – 0:3 (21:25, 21:25, 22:25). The win secured second place in the group for Montpellier with 10 points and a record of 4 wins – 2 losses.
At the same time, Warsaw fought a tough battle with Italian favorite Cucine Lube Civitanova, but lost dramatically by 2:3. The point gained secured the Poles' participation in the play-offs, but they remained third, despite also finishing with 10 points.
First place in the group went to Lube, who qualified directly for the quarterfinals, while Belgian Haasrode Leuven finished without a win.
Thus, Montpellier celebrated, while Warsaw will have to seek its path to the main phase through additional playoffs.
