The coach of the women's national volleyball team, Marcello Abbondanza, is back in Bulgaria to finalize the organization for the upcoming international season. The Italian specialist gave an extensive interview for the website of the Bulgarian federation. In it, Abbondanza revealed that he is working on the final details regarding the preparation program and the ultimate selection of players who will defend Bulgaria's colors in the Nations League and at the European Championship.
Two groups, one strategy
Abbondanza plans a clear structuring of the squad into two directions. The first group will travel and participate in the official matches of the Nations League. The second will remain in Sofia, where they will continue a focused training process aimed at technical and physical improvement.
The idea is to ensure a smooth transition for young players who have potential but are not yet fully ready for a permanent role at the highest international level. Some of them may establish themselves in their very first season, but for others, development will require more time and patience.
The coach is adamant that the process remains open. Around 13 volleyball players will form the core, but competition and form will be crucial factors throughout the summer.
Long-term horizon
In discussions with the federation, the emphasis is placed on building a young and sustainable group that will form the backbone of the national team in the coming years. Rejuvenation is not an end in itself, but a strategic move with a vision for a longer cycle of development and stability.
Abbondanza sees his task as directly involved in this process – not just to prepare a squad for one competition, but to build a foundation upon which Bulgaria can firmly establish itself on the European and world stage.
Preparation – entirely in Sofia
The summer camp will be held in Sofia. The time until the first matches is limited, which necessitates intensive and precisely planned work.
The first week of the Nations League will start with a tournament in Brazil. Players in the best current form will be chosen for the trip, while the rest will continue their preparation in the capital. This model will be followed in subsequent stages of the competition.
After the conclusion of the Nations League, the focus will shift to preparation for the European Championship, which will also take place in Sofia.
A look at the domestic championship
During his visit, Abbondanza will observe a match from the women's championship. According to him, the Bulgarian championship offers a good environment for the development of young players and gives them real opportunities to perform.
In recent years, the results of this approach have been seen at the national level in youth formations. At the club level, Maritsa continues to be an example with its consistent participation and competitive performances in the Champions League, relying precisely on players who have grown up in the domestic system.
The economic factor
The financial aspect cannot be ignored either. Economic stability and funding opportunities are a key factor for both club development and the national team. Where there is resource and a clear structure, faster progress also follows.
An intense summer awaits the national team, during which it will become clear to what extent the strategy for rejuvenation and longer-term squad building will yield the expected results.
