Sometimes life strikes without warning. And sometimes – just when you're on your knees – it extends a hand. For Sam Deroo, 2025 will forever remain asa rollercoaster of emotions– from the toughest news to the brightest hope. Shortly before the diagnosis that put his life on hold, the Belgian volleyball player received news that changed everything: he and his partner – former Bulgarian national player Dobriana Rabadzhieva – are expecting a daughter. This was reported by sporza.be.
"I have so many things worth living for," says the Belgium captain with a smile that shows tiredness but also genuine faith. As he goes through three difficult cycles of chemotherapy, it's precisely this thought that gives him the strength to look ahead.
The pregnancy is in an advanced stage, with the due date at the end of June.
"The best part of it all is that my girlfriend is expecting a child. That gives us a tremendous amount of positive energy," admits Deroo, not hiding his excitement. "I haven't asked her if I can say it publicly," he adds with a smile. "But this is something I'm looking forward to immensely – our girl."
The irony of fate is cruel. The two arrived in Belgium precisely to share the happy news with their family. Shortly after, camethe heavy blow– the cancer diagnosis.
"The last few weeks have been a real rollercoaster of emotions. At the end of October came the good news, a month later – the bad," says Samy.
But even the illness cannot completely overshadow this special period.
"My situation takes nothing away from the beauty of the pregnancy," he states emphatically. "Although it's difficult for her too – she has nausea and side effects. Nevertheless, she often traveled with me to Leuven and stayed by my side during the therapies."
It is in these moments that true strength becomes apparent – not the strength from serving and attacking, but the one born in the quietness of a hospital room. Deroo now speaks of the future not only as a volleyball player but also as a father. The expected child makes him rethink his life after the court as well.
"Will I stay long in Russia? Probably not," he muses. "Travels are not easy, and I want both families – mine and hers in Bulgaria – to be able to enjoy the child. Turkey or Italy are better options."
Despite everything, Sam Deroo remains a realist. He knows that he must first win the most important match – the one for his health. After that, decisions about his career will follow.
But today, that is not the most important thing. The most important thing is that after the worst news comes the best.
Sam Deroo and Dobriana Rabadzhieva are expecting a daughter.
And it is precisely she who becomes his strongest motivation – far beyond volleyball.
