Ten days after winning the Super Cup, Panionios Betsson started with a victory in the second round of the women's championship, overcoming AEK 3:1 (21:25, 25:21, 25:22, 25:23) in front of a full house at Andreas Varikas Hall.
The Bulgarian outside hitter Elitsa Atanasijevic played a decisive role for the hosts, being a leading figure in attack in the final part of the match. In the crucial fourth set, when trailing 21:22, it was she who led Panionios to a comeback and the final 25:23, closing the match. Atanasijevic finished the game with 17 points (16/37 attacks, or 43% success rate, 1 block, 36% positive reception and 22% perfect), taking responsibility in the most tense rallies.
After losing the first set, the "blue-reds" stabilized their block and attack game, and their character was evident in the third set, won after a 19:19 tie.
Panionios head coach Dragan Nesic emphasized the difficulty of the victory after the match:
"It was a difficult match. AEK played very well and served strongly. We controlled the match and I am happy for the victory. The atmosphere in the hall was key," Nesic stated.
With this success, Panionios cemented their 3rd place with 27 points, while AEK remains 7th with 18.
