For some time now, Polish champion Bogdanka LUK Lublin has been consistently solidifying its team's core. The club has already officially announced that leaders Wilfredo Leon, Marcin Komenda, and Kevin Sasak will continue to wear the champions' jersey in the coming seasons. On Monday, Daenan Gyimah – the Canadian middle blocker who quickly became an important figure in Stefan Antiga's squad – joined this group.
However, the news surrounding Gyimah is not limited to just his contract renewal. The middle blocker revealed that he has already started the application process for Polish citizenship – a move that could have a significant impact on Bogdanka LUK's future in PlusLiga.
A strong season for the champion
The 2025/2026 club season is in full swing, and the champion from Lublin is performing convincingly. After 12 matches played in PlusLiga, the team occupies second place in the standings, with only three losses. Additionally, Bogdanka started its participation in the Champions League group stage with a victory, further solidifying the team's ambitions on the European stage.
Daenan Gyimah, for whom this is his first season in Poland, also has a significant contribution to these results. The 27-year-old middle blocker quickly adapted to the level and style of PlusLiga and fit perfectly into Antiga's system.
Polish roots and a clear plan
Gyimah himself revealed that he does not feel like a foreigner in Poland, as he has Polish roots.
"My great-grandparents lived in Poland, my grandparents were born in Canada," he told the portalsiatkarskieligi.pl.
The middle blocker admitted that he has already taken the first steps to obtain Polish citizenship. However, he will not be able to represent the Polish national team due to an upcoming rule change that prohibits a player from playing for two different countries during their career.
Key detail for PlusLiga
Even without the prospect of playing for the national team, Gyimah's potential Polish citizenship is of paramount importance at the club level. The PlusLiga regulations require a minimum of three volleyball players with Polish citizenship to be on the court. After obtaining a passport, Gyimah will be considered a domestic player – a significant advantage for Bogdanka LUK's rotation and long-term planning.
It is no coincidence that the club quickly secured his services for the upcoming seasons as well. On social media, the decision was announced briefly and clearly by the player himself:
"Lublin – I'm staying. And I'm ready for more."
Bogdanka LUK Lublin's next match is on Tuesday, December 23, and promises to be a real hit in PlusLiga. PGE Projekt Warsaw – the current leader in the standings – is visiting Lublin. The first whistle is scheduled for 8:00 PM, and the match will provide a clear answer as to the champion's ambitions at this stage of the season.
