Poland announced the fourth host city for the upcoming World Volleyball Championship, and the choice fully met expectations. The cathedral of Polish volleyball – the legendary "Spodek" arena in Katowice – will host matches from the championship, thus joining Olsztyn, Gdańsk, and Łódź as a Silesian host city.
Although Katowice will not decide the fate of medals, the city's significance for Polish and world volleyball is undeniable. "Spodek" is the first association for thousands of fans when the Polish national team is mentioned. The arena has been the stage for some of the most memorable matches in the history of Polish volleyball and has been regarded as a true temple of the game for decades.
On Thursday morning, the president of the Polish Volleyball Federation, Sebastian Świderski, officially confirmed that the World Championship will also be held in Katowice. "Spodek" will host matches from two groups, meaning that a total of eight national teams will play their matches there.
Less than a month ago, Świderski announced that the championship would also take place in Łódź – a perfectly logical choice, given that "Atlas Arena" has hosted the country's largest volleyball forums for years. Earlier, Gdańsk's participation was also clear, as it has regularly hosted prestigious international tournaments in recent years.
After that, Olsztyn also appeared on the list. "Urania" Hall has not been the venue for national-level matches for a long time, which makes the decision particularly pleasant for fans from this region of Poland, who will once again have the opportunity to watch top-tier volleyball live.
With the addition of Katowice, the picture of the group stage is gradually becoming clearer. However, the big unknown remains – where the decisive phases of the tournament will take place and in which city the medals will be presented to the world champions. Expectations are that President Świderski will soon reveal this last secret regarding the organization of the championship, which promises to be one of the largest and most emotional in the history of Polish volleyball.
