Lokomotiv (Novosibirsk)'s Belgian outside hitter Sam Deroo did not participate in the team's last away match against Gorky (Nizhny Novgorod), which ended in a 1:3 victory for Novosibirsk (20:25, 25:17, 17:25, 26:28). A few days after the match, the Russian club revealed the reason for his absence – during a routine medical examination, Deroo was diagnosed with cancer.
Lokomotiv officially announced that the player is scheduled to undergo a course of chemotherapy, emphasizing that his contract remains valid and he continues to be part of the team.
In a message on its Telegram channel, the club addressed fans and the volleyball community, stating that all thoughts are with Sam and everyone at Lokomotiv is praying for his recovery, calling for support for the outside hitter in this difficult battle. His girlfriend, former national team player Dobriana Rabadzhieva, will also be by his side.
The grave news regarding Deroo's health overshadowed everything related to the sports result of the match in Nizhny Novgorod and shifted the focus to the human side of the game – behind every jersey number stands a destiny that sometimes extends far beyond the playing field.
Our editorial team sends its support to Sam Deroo in this difficult time. We wish him a clear mind, strong spirit, and peace on his path to recovery. Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones!
