Marcello Abbondanza: "Bulgaria has an extremely interesting and promising team"

The Italian specialist Marcello Abbondanza is once again at the helm of the Bulgarian women's national volleyball team. The experienced coach, who already had a successful period in our country in 2012–2013, gave his first comments after his appointment in an interview published on the official website of the Bulgarian Volleyball Federation (BVF.bg).

Return with a cause and confidence

Abbondanza emphasizes that his decision to return is dictated by his belief in the new generation of volleyball players, which is gradually establishing itself on the European and world stage. According to him, it is this young wave, combined with the growing quality of play, that signals Bulgaria is moving in the right direction.
"A talented generation is growing, which is already showing results. I believe that we can grow together – both me as a coach and the team as a collective," the Italian shares withBVF.bg.

The Goal – the Next Level

His second period at the helm of Bulgaria comes with a clearly defined goal: to take the step that was missing more than a decade ago. According to him, the potential is there, but to fully unleash it, time, persistence, and serious work will be needed.
"This is a process that has already begun. Bulgaria has a very interesting team and with the right approach, we can compete with the leading forces in Europe," Abbondanza comments.

Philosophy of Development, Not Immediate Results

The new head coach emphasizes that his main goal is the development of the team in terms of style and unity, rather than setting specific result-oriented goals right from the start. For him, victories come naturally when the structure and system of work are stable.
"It is important to see how much this squad can grow and how the federation will support the process with the necessary resources and time," he says.

Looking Back and Vision for the Future

Abbondanza admits that he continued to follow the Bulgarian team after the end of his first stay. Although there have been difficult years, he sees serious progress and new energy in the young players. He also mentions the team's strong performance at the last European Championship, where Bulgaria reached the top eight.
"Now we will try to make the next leap – the young girls have potential that needs to be developed correctly," the specialist adds.

Marcello Abbondanza returns to Bulgaria not just as a coach, but as a person with a clear mission – to build a generation capable of returning the country among the leading forces in women's volleyball. The interview, published byBVF.bg, outlines the framework of an ambitious but realistic project, where the future is built with patience, vision, and trust in youth.
