47-year-old Finnish setter Mikko Esko is returning to the court and will strengthen Estonian vice-champion Barrus Võru. Colleagues from the Polish website report one of the most interesting news in European volleyballsiatka.org
The legendary playmaker, who only a year ago played in the Champions League with AH Volley Ljubljana, agreed to help the Estonian team after their primary setter Anton Valimaa suffered an injury and will be out for six weeks. Esko signed a contract until the end of December 2025.
Coach Oliver Luutsepp described the transfer as 'the best short-term solution,' and the veteran himself stated that he is happy to be part of local volleyball: 'I have played against Estonian teams many times, but this will be the first time I'm on their side.'
Mikko Esko's career began in 1995 and has taken him through clubs in Finland, Germany, Italy, Russia, Turkey, Belgium, and Slovenia. He has over 305 matches for the Finnish national team, with whom he reached fourth place at the European Championship in 2007.
Bulgarian fans are well acquainted with the experienced setter from Finland's matches in the World League in Sofia in 2012 — even then, he was already a symbol of longevity and dedication to the game. And today, almost three decades after his debut, Esko continues to prove that volleyball courts remain his true home.
