Spain's champion CV Guaguas successfully started its European campaign, after overcoming MÁV Elore SC Foxconn away with 1:3 (21–25, 16–25, 25–21, 19–25) in the Hungarian hall MET Arena. The match lasted 108 minutes, and the return leg will be played on October 30 at 7:00 PM in Gran Canaria Arena.
With this victory, the team from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria made a strong start to its latest busy season, in which it will compete on four fronts – three domestic (in Spain) and one European. For the "yellows" from the islands, this was also the first major test of a campaign that will not end before spring.
Expectations for an even battle were justified, especially in the third set, when the Hungarians, led by Argentine specialist Omar Pelillo, managed to temporarily get back into the match. The MÁV Elore SC Foxconn team, which last season won both the championship title and the Hungarian Cup, showed character but faced Guaguas' more organized play.
The Spaniards demonstrated an excellent balance between attack and defense, and the team's setter is former Bulgarian national Dobromir Dimitrov, who led the offense with experience and composure. Dimitrov played in three of the four sets, being substituted only in the second part. The most prolific scorer for the winners was the star from Trento's golden period, Osmany Juantorena, who finished with 16 points (3 aces, 2 blocks).

Second set | 16–25 |
Third set | 25–21 |
Fourth set | 19–25 |
CV Guaguas managed to assert dominance in three sets, where they controlled the tempo and minimized errors. The Hungarians showed fighting spirit and took advantage of a dip in the opponent's concentration in the third set, but the Spaniards' final push settled the dispute.
After gaining the advantage, CV Guaguas will seek a decisive victory at home on October 30 to secure its qualification for the next stage of the tournament.
Gran Canaria Arena is expected to be full, as fans on the island are ready to support the team in its attempt to continue its winning streak in Europe.
