A few days earlier in the Philippines, an entire country was ready to celebrate a historic miracle. The hosts defeated Iran, the last point was won, the hall erupted – people cried with joy, players knelt, everyone knew: this was their moment.
And then came the screen.
A video challenge – and everything collapsed. The point was overturned, the match turned around, and Iran snatched the victory. Thousands of people, seconds earlier in ecstasy, found themselves in silence and tears. An entire nation felt how merciless sport can be.
🇧🇬 The Bulgarian story: when a challenge cannot break you
At the same tournament, history was about to repeat itself. But this time with a different name on the scoreboard – Bulgaria.
Our boys had already come all the way from the abyss to hope – trailing 0:2, turning it around to 2:2, and a tie-break that turned into a nervous war. At 14:12, Iliya Petkov exploded with a block that sent everyone in white-green-red into ecstasy. 15:12, victory was "there," within arm's reach.
But American coach-legend Karch Kiraly requested a video challenge. And like a knife through the euphoria came the decision – the point overturned, 14:13.
In that moment, not just the fate of the match, but the character of a team was decided.
The Bulgarians did not flinch. Not for a second. No panic, no collapse. The next ball was again for Iliya Petkov – and this time the middle blocker sliced through the block with an attack that we will always remember. 15:13. Victory. History.

The Philippines and Bulgaria experienced the same scenario. One point, one screen, one decision.
Some collapsed. Others rose.
