Karch Kiraly's boys started strong and took a 2:0 lead in sets. This woke up the Cubans, who played at a very high level in the third set, increased their attack efficiency, and strengthened their serve. Cuba even saved two match points and managed to close the set in their favor – 25:23.
In the fourth set, the tension reached its peak. Cuba had moments of superiority, but despite the absence of starting setter Mike Christensen and libero Erik Shoji, the Americans held their ground. They saved two set points and, on their third opportunity, closed the match 27:25, eliminating their opponent from the tournament.
