Japan won a game against the USA and will play in the quarterfinals

Japan won one set against the USA 1:3 (16:25, 18:25, 25:18, 19:25), thanks to which they became the last participant in the 1/4 finals.
Crucial for Japan's advancement was the third set, which started with several ties up to 6:6, when the Asians stepped up their game. The first timeout for the USA came at a score of 11:7 for Japan. The comfortable lead gained gave peace of mind to the medalists from this year's VNL tournament, who continued to keep their opponent at a distance of 5-6 points. Nishida and Tahakachi accumulated point after point,

to finish as the top scorers for Japan with 18 points (1 block) and 9 respectively.

Matthew Anderson served an ace to bring his team closer to the Japanese (23:18), but then made a service error, giving the first set point to Philippe Blain's boys. The coveted point that sent Japan to the quarter-finals came from an ace by middle blocker Akihiro Yamauchi.

Italy, USA, Slovenia, France, Poland, Germany, and Brazil will also continue to fight for medals. The Americans and Slovenians took first place in their groups with three victories each. Thus, tomorrow's match between Canada and Serbia will not matter for the distribution of the quarter-final pairs, which will be formed according to the overall ranking in the group stage (1–8, 2–7, 3–6, 4–5). Brazil is certainly in 7th place, Japan is 8th.

The 1/4-final pairs will be definitively determined on Saturday, August 3, after the conclusion of the Italy - Poland match.
