Turkey topped Group C in the women's Olympic tournament after defeating the Dominican Republic 3:1 (21:25, 25:18, 25:22, 25:15). The match marked the return of star Zehra Gunes, who missed the team's first match due to injury.

Melissa Vargas and co. started slowly and conceded one set to the inspired Dominicans.

The Sultans of the Net then tightened their ranks and won three consecutive sets, the last of which by a 10-point margin. With Gunes in the starting lineup, the Turks quickly recovered from their less-than-ideal start, unlike what happened in their first match against the Netherlands on Monday, and are now in a very comfortable position in Pool C.
Star Vargas scored 31 points (2 blocks and 3 aces). 25-year-old Gunes played in all four sets and achieved 9 points (4 blocks), including the monstrous block with which Turkey won the match.
For Dominicana, the most effective player was Brayelin Martinez with 14 points.

Thus, Daniele Santarelli's girls are one step away from the quarterfinals with two wins and 5 points. Italy is second with 3 points and the Netherlands with 1. The Dominican Republic has not won a point.
Tonight is the match between the Netherlands and Italy. Its outcome will determine the favorites to advance to the knockout stage.
