Germany was on the verge of a full comeback against the USA, but failed to secure the win and lost 2:3 (21-25, 17-25, 25-17, 25-20, 11-15) in their second match of Group C in the men's Olympic volleyball tournament. The Bundesteam managed to rally after being down 0:2 and took the game to a tie-break. In the tie-break, the game went point for point until 5:5, when Holt stepped up to serve and delivered 2 aces. This was followed by a block from the Americans, who were the first to reach 8:5 and switch sides. Holt continued to trouble the Bundesteam's reception, and after good defense and a back-row attack, the score swelled to 9:5. The US middle blocker again delivered a strong serve, forcing the Germans to pass the ball over, and the difference became 5 points in favor of the North Americans.

Michal Winiarski's boys managed to narrow the gap to two points after strong serves and a block in the middle, making it 11:9. Defalco then stepped up to the service line and managed to make it extremely difficult for the Germans to receive. Another serve from Defalco turned into an ace and the first match point. The Germans managed to win back two points, but a serve into the net by Thiele ended the match.
The most prolific scorer in the match was Kaliczek from the Bundesteam, who scored 21 points (2 aces). For the winners, Defalco was the most prominent with 18 points (two blocks and 2 aces).

Veteran Grozer contributed 16 points (2 blocks and 2 aces).
Thus, the USA topped the group standings with 2 wins and 5 points, followed by Germany in second place with 3 points, then Japan with 1, and Argentina without a point. The last two teams will play each other tomorrow.
