Bulgaria survived hell and after saving 3 match points is in the 1/4-finals against Spain at the World Cup in Tashkent!

In a match that shortened the lives of fans by at least one year, Bulgaria snatched a hard-fought 3:2 (25:22, 25:23, 20:25, 14:25, 16:14) victory over the USA in a U19 Men's World Championship Round of 16 clash in Tashkent.

Following this dramatic success, Miroslav Zhivkov's boys will face Spain in a decisive match for a place in the Final Four. Earlier in the day, the Iberians convincingly defeated Argentina 3:0.

The hero of the match was Jasmin Velichkov, who scored 22 points. It was his block that ended the tough five-set drama, in which the Americans were only a step away from a complete comeback.

The match started extremely evenly, but the young Bulgarian volleyball players demonstrated composure and maturity in the decisive rallies. The American team scored slightly more points in attack (16 vs 14), but this was not enough. The Bulgarians compensated with excellent net play, recording 4 successful blocks – compared to only one for the opponent. Although they did not score direct points from serves, they forced the opponent to make errors, which brought them a total of 7 points from unforced actions by the Americans. In defense, the young "Lions" performed at a very high level, recording 17 digs – 5 more than their opponent. This defensive stability allowed the Bulgarians to extend rallies and use every opportunity for a counterattack. The most prolific for the Bulgarian team was Jasmin Velichkov with 5 points, followed by Totkov with 4. For the USA, Lamoreaux stood out with 7 points, and Batista added 4 more. Unfortunately, at a score of 11:10 for us, Nikola Konstantinov was injured, stepping awkwardly upon landing and was carried off. Manolev replaced him.

In the second set, our team also took the lead, allowing the opponent to equalize several times at the end of the game. The score went point for point, with the Bulgarians again showing their advantage in blocking and being the first to get a set point. The end of the set came after a USA service error.

The third set did not start well for our nationals, who allowed the Americans an early lead, with Marinov being blocked several times. The latter was replaced by Peychinov, but the game wasn't going well – only our blocks kept us close to the opponent, as did their errors. Here Velichkov's outbursts of nerves began, and he received two yellow cards by the end of the set. He was subsequently substituted, but things had already gone downhill, as the score was already 14:20 in favor of the USA. Our team played out the set, managing to score only 6 more points, three of which came from opponent errors.

The fourth set offered the worst we have seen from Bulgaria's play. Nothing was going right – substitutions and timeouts didn't help. There was simply a total breakdown in our ranks. At a score of 9:16 for the USA, Bulgarian fans gasped when Velichkov lay on the ground, clutching his leg. Thankfully, it was only a temporary cramp in his limb, and he continued the match. Until the end of the unfortunate set, our players simply stopped playing, and its conclusion logically came with an 11-point difference in favor of the opponent. The match went to a tie-break!

The final set began with parity in the score, which continued until 5:5. A block-out and a block against Velichkov gave the Americans the lead. An attack through the center by Nikolaev and an attack by Marinov restored equality. After poor defensive play, imprecise setting by Uzunov, and a block against Marinov, the difference swelled to 10:13 for the USA. Manolev returned one point, but an opponent's attack followed, and the Americans now had their first match point. Uzunov with two hands over the block narrowed the gap, which was followed by a block from Velichkov, forcing the 'Yankees' coach to call a timeout at 13:14 in their favor. Again, the omnipresent Velichkov equalized for 14:14, eliminating three match points for the opponent. Pressured by this unexpected Bulgarian surge, the Americans made an attack error, thus exchanging positions – now Bulgaria was on the verge of success. It was sealed appropriately with a brutal block by Velichkov in the center, and so Bulgaria qualified for the top 8 of the World Championship.

Comeback, Character, and Statistics from the Five-Set Drama between Bulgaria and USA

Bulgaria eliminated the USA after a dramatic 3:2 victory in sets, but statistically speaking, it was a match where the Americans had a slight superiority in most elements – but not in mental resilience in the decisive moments.

The USA scored more points in attack – 59 against 54 for Bulgaria, which is logical given their dominance in the third and fourth sets. However, the Bulgarian team demonstrated excellent net play: with 20 successful blocks against 16 for the USA, the "Lion Cubs" compensated for lost ground in attack and neutralized key opposing players in the most important rallies.

The serve was again not the strong suit of the Bulgarian team – without a single direct point from service, against 2 for the USA. But this was somewhat compensated by tactical serving and stable defense, which limited the damage. And here comes one of the strongest links – digs in defense. Although fewer in number than the opponent (78 for Bulgaria against 85 for the USA), our team showed that it knows when to wait and how to capitalize on the opponent's errors. And there were plenty of them – 28 unforced errors from the USA against 22 for Bulgaria.

In the elements of game organization, the two teams were close – 137 sets for Bulgaria against 146 for the USA, as well as equivalent reception statistics. This further highlights how evenly matched the encounter was and how the victory did not come through dominance, but through heart, composure, and resilience in the tie-break.

Individually,Jasmin Velichkov was the engine of the Bulgarian team- scoring 22 points, including the decisive block for the victory.Nikolaev added 11, demonstrating excellent attacking flair through the center. On the other side,Lamoreaux was the undisputed leader for the USA with 28 points, andBatista finished with 15, but their efforts were not enough for success.

In summary - this was a clash in which Bulgaria did not win by statistics, but won by spirit. And in an elimination match at a World Championship - that is the decisive indicator.
