Slovenia with historic first victory at the Olympics

Slovenia made history after winning its first victory in its first match at the Olympic Games. In a Group A match, the Europeans dominated from start to finish and defeated Canada 3-1 (25-21, 25-20, 20-25, 25-21), South Paris Arena 1.

The Slovenians' triumph at South Paris Arena 1 put them in first place in the group with three points, one more than France and two more than Serbia. Canada is last without a point. With 4.89 points for the FIVB world ranking, the Europeans also overtook France to reach fourth place in the list with 345.28.
Opposite hitter Tonček Štern left the court injured in the first minutes of the match, but then returned and was the top scorer for Slovenia in the match with 24 points.

Outside hitters Klemen Čebulj and Tine Urnaut recorded 15 and 13 points respectively.

For Canada, Eric Loeppky scored 17 points and Arthur Szwarc added 14.
The men have a rest day on Monday and will return to the court on Tuesday with four matches – Italy vs. Egypt at 9:00 local time (7:00 GMT) in Group B, USA vs. Germany at 13:00 local time (11:00 GMT) in Group C, Slovenia vs. Serbia at 17:00 local time (15:00 GMT) in Group A, and France vs. Canada at 21:00 local time (19:00 GMT), also in Group A.
