Asparuhov with 23 points and 5 blocks, but Slepsk lost in a five-set drama

Bulgarian international Asparuh Asparuhov played a strong match in the second round of the Polish PlusLiga, but his "Slepsk Malow" (Suwalki) suffered a second consecutive loss after a tie-break. The hosts lost to GKS (Katowice) with a score of 2:3 (22:25, 25:16, 23:25, 25:22, 11:15) after 154 minutes of play in front of 1500 spectators.
Asparuhov finished with 23 points, scoring 17 successful attacks from 39 attempts (44% efficiency), adding 5 blocks and 1 ace. The Bulgarian was second in scoring for the hosts after opposite Bartosz Filipiak, who scored 30 points.
The national player also distinguished himself with his powerful serve. one of his serves reached a speed of 109 km/h, which earned him first place in the Red Bull Super Asów ranking for the fastest serve in the match. Jakub Szymanski from GKS with 105 km/h and his teammate Bartosz Filipiak with 103 km/h remained behind him.
Asparuhov was Slepsk's most effective blocker with 5 points from this element. In reception, he was engaged 28 times, recording 36% positive and 11% perfect reception, with two direct errors.
The hosts started evenly, but GKS managed to take the first set with 25:22. In the second part, Slepsk responded with much more aggressive play, with Asparuhov's serves making it difficult for the guests to receive. The team from Suwalki equalized after a convincing 25:16.
The third set again went through turnovers. The hosts took a 6:3 lead, but GKS gradually turned the tide and reached 25:23. In the fourth part, Asparuhov and Filipiak bore the main burden in attack, scoring 7 points each. Slepsk managed to close the set with 25:22 and send the match into a tie-break.
The decisive part was even until 8:8, after which an ace by Bartosz Krulicki and an error by Filipiak gave the guests an advantage. GKS held its lead and won with 15:11.
Interestingly, Slepsk outperformed their opponent in several key statistical indicators. The hosts made 62 successful attacks against 59 for the guests, and the difference in blocks was even more significant - 16:7. Both teams finished with 4 aces each.
The number of errors proved crucial. GKS received a total of 33 points from the hosts' inaccuracies, while Slepsk won 24 points from the opponent's errors. This 9-point difference largely nullified the Suwalki team's superiority in attack and blocking.
For the winners, the most effective player was Michal Superlak with 23 points, followed by Jakub Szymanski with 17 and Matthew Knigge with 13. Superlak also received the award for the most valuable player (MVP).
GKS continues its excellent start in the PlusLiga, after surprising the champion Aluron Warta (Zawiercie) with a 3:0 victory in the first round. For Slepsk, this is a second consecutive 2:3 loss, with Piotr Graban's team remaining with two points in the standings.
