Jersey for 69 euros and treasure for 10,000: The "Pirates" of Royan turned volleyball into an adventure

French top-flight newcomer Royan Atlantique has hidden riddles on its official kit, leading to a buried statuette. Just days after the unusual initiative was unveiled, the team caused a sensation on the court as well, defeating champions Montpellier.
What could a volleyball jersey, buried treasure, and a 10,000 euro prize have in common? The answer comes from the French city of Royan, where the local club decided to mark its historic entry into the elite league with a marketing initiative that goes far beyond the realm of sports.
Royan Atlantique, known by the nickname "The Pirates," has transformed its official kit for the 2026/2027 season into a treasure map. Riddles are hidden on the black and yellow jersey, the solving of which should lead participants to a statuette buried somewhere in France. The game is called "The Secret of the Pirates" (Le Secret des Pirates), and the prize for the winner is 10,000 euros.
One jersey, multiple riddles
To join the adventure, anyone interested must purchase the special kit for 69 euros. This is not a separate promotional T-shirt, but the same model that Royan's volleyball players wear in their official matches.
Drawings, words, sentences, and symbols are located on the front and back, as well as on the inside of the jersey. All of them are connected to a series of riddles. "This is the same jersey that the players wear during matches. All the details on it, front and back, are connected to a riddle," explains club president David Guel to French Radio Alouette. He deliberately refuses to reveal a specific hint. According to him, participants should pay attention to absolutely everything.
Participation itself does not require immediate travel. The riddles can be solved at home, alone, with family, or with friends. Only when the presumed location of the statuette is determined will participants need to search for it on site.
Finding the statuette is not enough
The organizers have provided an important condition that excludes the accidental finding of the treasure as sufficient grounds for victory. According to the official rules, the first participant to bring the buried statuette must also prove how they reached the correct solution. Only if they can explain their reasoning sequence will they receive the 10,000 euro prize. Everyone who purchases the kit also receives a special brochure with an introduction to the game. The challenge is open not only to volleyball fans. The club relies precisely on this – to involve people who have never attended a volleyball match in the search.
An idea born three years ago
President David Guel reveals to Radio Alouette that the project's concept dates back about three years. The biggest challenge was fitting all the riddles onto a single jersey.
"I didn't want part of the riddle to be placed in some separate booklet," he explains. That's why the kit becomes a key element of the adventure, and the accompanying brochure only has an introductory function.
Guel does not commit to a prediction of how long it will take participants to find the treasure. "I think the search could last several months. But we don't know if it will be easy or difficult. This is our first such project," says the president. The marketing goal is also clearly formulated. "We wanted to communicate in a slightly different way because we are already starting to become known in the volleyball world, and also throughout the country," explains Guel.
From League B to the French elite
The initiative is linked to the most important achievement in the history of Royan Atlantique. In May 2026, "The Pirates" won the title in the French League B and secured a place in the highest level of professional volleyball in the country – Alterna VOLSTAR – for the first time. For a club from a relatively small Atlantic resort, this is a huge step forward. Royan, however, does not want to be just another newcomer to the elite. The management strives to build a recognizable identity around the pirate symbolism, which is present in both the emblem and the overall presentation of the team.
This is where the strength of the new campaign lies. Usually, the sale of club merchandise depends on the popularity of the team and its players. In Royan, they reversed the logic – they created a product that in itself generates interest, regardless of whether the buyer is a volleyball fan.
And then "The Pirates" also conquered the champion
The curious marketing story received an unexpected continuation on the court as well. On October 17, Royan Atlantique debuted in the elite in the most impressive way possible – with a 3:2 (22:25, 22:25, 29:27, 25:22, 15:13) victory over the reigning French champions Montpellier. The hosts were down 0:2 in sets and even had to save a match point in the third set. Instead of accepting defeat, they achieved a complete comeback in front of the crowd at the Espace Cordouan hall. The most effective player was opposite Cheikh Diop with 31 points. He scored 26 out of 42 attacks, or 62% success rate, and added 3 aces and 2 blocks. His performance also earned him the award for the most valuable player of the match.
Outside hitter Maxime Hervoir, who played for Montpellier last season, added 19 points against his former team.
Thus, "The Pirates" started the season with two stories that could hardly have been planned better – an original initiative that drew attention to the club, and a victory over the champions in the very first match.
Whether someone will manage to unravel the secret of the jersey and find the buried treasure, remains to be seen. But even before the start of the actual search, "Royan" has already shown how a small volleyball club can attract attention far beyond the sports halls.
