Vesela Lecheva after the General Assembly of the BOC: A decisive step towards normalcy in the Olympic movement

The Bulgarian Olympic Committee (BOC) held its first General Assembly after the conclusion of the legal disputes over the organization's leadership, which lasted more than a year. Chairwoman Vesela Lecheva described the meeting as an important step towards restoring normal operations and called for more transparency, responsibility, and accountability in Bulgarian sports.
51 out of a total of 86 BOC members participated in the General Assembly, thus ensuring the necessary quorum. Among those present was former chairwoman Stefka Kostadinova, who participated as an individual member of the organization. The president of the Bulgarian Volleyball Federation, Lyubomir Ganev, also participated in the assembly.

One of the main highlights was the financial report, which was unanimously adopted, including with Kostadinova's vote. The results of the Olympic headquarters' activities were also presented, with special attention paid to the two bronze medals from the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games, won by snowboarder Tervel Zamfirov and biathlete Lora Hristova.
"I believe this was a decisive step towards normalcy in the Olympic movement. The previous one also went smoothly, but this gave the future leadership a start to realize all its ideas and goals, which it presented as a program last year," Vesela Lecheva said after the meeting.
She emphasized that the leadership must now focus its efforts on fulfilling the set tasks, instead of continuing the disputes from the past.
"We will not look back. I hope everyone has learned their lesson regarding their responsible functions. As one of the most influential organizations in sports management, we must be transparent, responsible, and above all, accountable," commented the BOC chairwoman.
Lecheva also addressed the financial problems inherited from the previous administration. According to her, the identified deficits and liabilities must be cleared jointly with the old leadership.
Stefka Kostadinova's behavior attracted particular attention. At the end of the General Assembly, the long-serving BOC chairwoman wished her successor success and expressed readiness to assist in the organization's work.

Lecheva accepted her words with hope, but also with some caution.
"I hope Ms. Stefka Kostadinova is sincere, the previous General Assembly also ended that way. Every word spoken should be given with the necessary frankness, honesty, and commitment to Bulgarian sports," she said.
The BOC chairwoman also sent a broader message to sports organizations, warning that prolonged administrative and legal conflicts have a direct impact on athletes' preparation.
"This was not only happening with the BOC, but also with other federations. Such practices hinder sports, and most importantly, our athletes and coaches suffer. All those who have dreams of preparing as well as possible and winning medals at major competitions. These negative practices must be stopped," Lecheva stated emphatically.
During the meeting, Lecheva also thanked the Ministry of Youth and Sports for the new building provided, which will house the BOC headquarters.
The General Assembly also has symbolic significance for the Olympic movement in our country. After Vesela Lecheva's election on March 19, 2025, legal appeals followed, which blocked the organization's work for more than a year, even though the International Olympic Committee recognized the newly elected leadership.
Now, the BOC faces the task of overcoming the consequences of this period and focusing its efforts on the development of Bulgarian sports and preparation for the next Olympic Games.
