The historic bronze from EuroVolley 2026 brought Finland much more than their first European Championship medal. "Suomi" made an impressive leap in the world rankings and climbed seven positions within the tournament alone – from No. 17 to No. 10 in the world. The final big hit came in the bronze medal match. The 3-0 (25:23, 25:20, 29:27) victory over Slovenia brought the Finns a total of 14.75 points for the world ranking. Before the match, Finland was No. 13, and after it, they are now No. 10 with 253.56 points.
Just three days earlier, the Finns had received another 11.48 points for their sensational 3-2 win against world champions Italy in the quarterfinals. Thus, the two victories over Italy and Slovenia alone brought a total of 26.23 points.
However, the upward trajectory began in the group stage. Finland accumulated points against Denmark, Belgium, Serbia, and the Netherlands, and then continued its march in the eliminations. Losses to Estonia and France took away some of their points, but the big victories against opponents significantly higher in the rankings proved to be much more valuable.
The bronze medal match is particularly indicative. Before it, Slovenia was No. 6 in the world, while Finland occupied the 13th position. After the convincing victory, "Suomi" jumped three places to No. 10, while the Slovenians lost 14.75 points and dropped to No. 8.
This seriously changes the way Finland should be viewed next season. The Scandinavians will make their debut in the Volleyball Nations League in 2027, with their participation guaranteed as the tournament expands to 19 teams for the next edition. And the newcomer will not enter the strongest annual tournament for national teams from the position of an underdog. On the contrary – after their historic European Championship, Finland is now the tenth team in the world and has moved directly closer to Bulgaria in the rankings.
Just days ago, the scale of Finland's rise was already becoming apparent. After eliminating Italy, Volleyball World noted that Finland had reached No. 12 in the world. The victory over Slovenia for the bronze completed the huge leap to tenth position.
In a few weeks, Finland changed its status. From No. 17 in the world before EuroVolley – to a bronze medalist, No. 10 in the rankings, a participant in the 2027 World Cup, and a future VNL debutant. And from a Bulgarian perspective, the emergence of another such close contender in the world rankings is a detail that is certainly worth following next season.
