The Serbian men's national volleyball team continues its poor performance in this year's edition of the Nations League. The "Eagles" suffered their third consecutive defeat on home soil in Belgrade and their sixth overall in the tournament, after losing to Argentina with a score of 1:3 (25:18, 18:25, 23:25, 12:25).
Gjorgje Cretu's selection started the match promisingly and won the first set, as was also the case against Cuba. But, to the regret of the Serbian audience, the development once again took a negative turn.
The Argentinians dominated in attack, and that was precisely the decisive difference. They showed greater consistency on serve, and although the block was at a similar level to that of their opponent, the difference in attack proved fatal for the Serbs. Interestingly, the hosts made fewer errors, but this did not compensate for the shortcomings in key elements.
The collapse came in the fourth game, where Argentina literally steamrolled Serbia, leaving them with only 12 points. After a contested third set and a battle until the last ball, the Serbian team seemed to collapse mentally and physically, without the strength to return to the match and reach a tie-break.
Gomez was the top scorer for Argentina with 20 points, while for Serbia, Dušan Luburić scored 18, followed by Veljko Mašulović with 12.
Serbia now has a record of 1 win and 6 losses after seven matches, and their last game of the tournament in Belgrade will be against Germany on Sunday at 8:00 PM. The match is expected to be extremely difficult, as the Germans are also fighting for a spot in the final eight.
