In a statement made to journalists in Burgas, outside the official VNL press conference, the head coach of the men's national volleyball team, Gian Lorenzo Blengini, shared his personal motivation and expectations for the Nations League tournament, which starts this week in the seaside city.
"The guys have been preparing very diligently since the beginning of the camp. There is a high spirits and enthusiasm because for the first time since I've been in Bulgaria, we will play in front of a home crowd," Blengini stated, emphasizing the importance of the home tournament for the team.
The Italian specialist admitted that he feels closely connected to Bulgarian volleyball:
"It's not an exaggeration to say that in terms of volleyball, I feel Bulgarian. I am participating in building a new team with a future. It is an honor for us to compete against top teams in front of a Bulgarian audience."
The coach also commented on the positive evaluations that the Bulgarian team receives from players of leading volleyball nations, but warned that "these are just nice words," and emphasized the need for serious and daily work.
"We have potential and quality, but there is a lot of work ahead. We started a process last year with a short-term goal - to reach a certain level within three years. Already next year we need to be stronger, but that comes through results," he added.
Despite the youth and talent of the squad, Blengini is adamant that only successes will solidify the team's status:
"We cannot rely solely on potential. We need to start winning now. We know that the hall will be full - this brings pressure, but also immense motivation. Our task is to direct this energy in the right direction."
The coach concluded by reminding that despite Bulgaria's lower starting position in the world rankings, the ambition remains clear:
"Our goal is to climb the rankings and qualify for the Olympic Games. We will give our all."
