A serious incident at the e-work Arena in Busto Arsizio could disrupt the preparation for the new season of the Italian elite team Laica UYBA Busto Arsizio. Part of the facility's roof structure collapsed on Thursday, September 10, around 3:00 PM local time, with materials falling inside the hall. There were no injuries in the incident.
The collapse occurred while workers were in the facility, engaged in inspections related to upcoming maintenance activities on the roof and the foyer area. Firefighters arrived at the scene, and the affected area was secured.
The incident is particularly unpleasant for Laica UYBA Busto Arsizio, as the e-work Arena is not only the home venue for the Italian Serie A1 participant but also the team's main training ground.
The club's official training program for this week stipulated that until Thursday, the volleyball players would alternate morning weight training sessions with afternoon ball training sessions precisely on the central court at the e-work Arena. This means that on the day of the incident, the first team had a planned afternoon session in the same facility.
For Friday, September 11, the program anyway takes Busto Arsizio out of its own hall. Enrico Barbolini's team is scheduled to hold its first joint preseason training session with Igor Gorgonzola Novara at Pala Igor at 2:00 PM. After that, Saturday and Sunday are rest days.
Thus, the club has a few days before the potential closure of the e-work Arena directly affects the next week of preparation. For now, there is no official information on when the team will be able to return to the hall.
The situation also affects the first major volleyball event planned there before the start of the season. On September 18 and 19, the e-work Arena is scheduled to host the 22nd edition of the "Mimo Fusco" tournament.
According to the program officially published by the Italian Women's League, the tournament is to feature hosts Laica UYBA Busto Arsizio, Millenium Brescia, Club Italia, and Volleyball Casalmaggiore. The matches are scheduled for live television broadcast on RaiSport and RaiPlay.
Currently, on the official website of Lega Pallavolo Serie A Femminile, the tournament continues to be listed as scheduled for the e-work Arena. No decision has been published regarding its relocation or postponement.
Laica UYBA Busto Arsizio is part of Serie A1, and the e-work Arena is also listed as its official home venue for the new championship. The first home match in the championship is scheduled for October 4 against Igor Gorgonzola Novara.
After the incident, the main question now is how long it will take to assess the condition of the facility and whether it can again host training sessions and matches.
