The Serbian national volleyball team could not reach the four-team friendly tournament in Poland, due to the global collapse of airport software systems.
"Due to a global IT system collapse and the resulting airport paralysis, the Serbian national team will not be able to participate in a friendly tournament in Gdansk, which will feature the national teams of Poland, Japan, and the USA. The Polish Volleyball Association is still trying to secure a suitable replacement and we will keep you informed of any changes," stated an announcement on the organizers' official website.
Despite the efforts of the PZPS, which is hosting the tournament at Ergo Arena, a replacement for the Serbian team could not be found. This forced the organizers to make changes to the program, with open training sessions for the resting team taking place instead of Serbia's matches. In the tournament, Poland defeated the USA 3:2 and lost to Japan with the same result.
On July 19, companies and organizations worldwide – from banks to airlines and media – suffered an IT collapse that led to disruptions and delays in a number of services. The impact also affected a number of companies in Bulgaria, such as banks and telecoms. Flight delays were registered at many airports in Europe, reported the BBC. According to informed sources, the collapse was due to an update of the CrowdStrike software, which in turn blocked Windows-based systems.
