Shock for French women's volleyball: Vice-champion withdraws

French volleyball suffered a severe blow with the news that the country's vice-champion, "Neptunes Nantes," is withdrawing from participation in the elite League A for the 2025/2026 season. The club officially announced its decision via a statement on its website, citing severe financial difficulties accumulated since the previous season.

The main blow to the team's budget was dealt after the termination of the partnership with the main sponsor - the "Realites" company - which left the club with a deficit of 800,000 euros. Although the management managed to reduce some of the debts, 155,000 euros are still unpaid to the club's own association, and the current budget deficit amounts to approximately 350,000 euros.

Consequences for the international calendar: The door to the Champions League opens for another

The decision comes exactly one month before the Champions League draw, causing a serious reshuffling of the program. "Neptunes Nantes" earned its right to participate in the competition thanks to a strong season with a vice-champion title, a Supercup, and a French Cup final, but now frees up a spot that needs to be filled.

Who will fill the vacant position?

The French Federation and the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV) will likely offer the vacant spot to the next team in the 2024/2025 season's standings, most likely the bronze medalist from the league, if they meet the participation criteria. Other possibilities include:

  • A wild card for a club with proven international experience;

  • An invitation to the fourth-ranked team, if the third-ranked team has not applied or does not meet CEV requirements;

  • In an extreme case, the position may be reallocated among other national federations.

Official confirmation is expected within days, as the draw for the Champions League group stage is approaching, and organizational structures are committed to preparing the program without delay.

Strategic retreat from "Neptunes"

Despite its sporting successes, the club emphasized that the decision is an "act of responsibility" and is aimed at preserving the club as an institution, association, and academy. With 450 young athletes and an academy with traditions dating back to 1968, "Neptunes Nantes" chose to sacrifice its elite status to ensure its long-term survival and the development of women's volleyball in the region.

"Being responsible sometimes means giving up the top so as not to sacrifice the foundations," the statement said.

Conclusion

The decision of "Neptunes Nantes" comes at a crucial moment and will have a direct impact on the composition of the Champions League participants. Although the club's future remains outside the spotlight of major European stages, it provides an important lesson on the cost of sustainability and the balance between ambitions and reality. CEV is expected to announce the new participant in the coming weeks - a development that will undoubtedly be watched with great interest by the sports community.
