Historic success! Greece is in the Top 8 of Europe after 35 years

The Greek women's national team achieved one of the greatest successes in its history after crushing France and qualifying for the EuroVolley 2026 quarterfinals.
France – Greece 0:3 (16:25, 18:25, 20:25)
The Greek team played an impressive Round of 16 match in Brno and practically gave the opponent no chance to get back into the game. The national team controlled all three sets and closed the match with a decisive 25:16, 25:18, and 25:20.
Thus, Greece returns among the top eight teams on the Old Continent after a full 35 years. The previous similar achievement was from the European Championship in Italy in 1991, when the team finished in eighth place. However, under that format, there was no quarterfinal elimination phase, which means that Greece will now play a EuroVolley quarterfinal match for the first time.
The big figure against France was Marta Evdokia Anthouli, who finished as the top scorer in the match with 20 points. For the French, Depie scored 12.
Efrosini Bakodimu, Markela Papageorgiou, and Tikmanidou each added 9 points for the winners. Bakodimu, however, was unable to finish the match. According to Serbian Meridian Sport, she suffered an injury in the second set, having already scored 9 points by that time. For now, there is no official information about the nature and severity of the injury.
Greece was also an opponent of Bulgaria in Group B in Brno. Our national team lost the direct match 1:3 (20:25, 25:21, 18:25, 23:25). In the final standings, Greece finished third and Bulgaria fourth, with both teams advancing to the Round of 16.
In the quarterfinals, the Greek team will face the winner of the Serbia – Croatia match, which is tonight in Brno. The Serbians are favorites to advance.
If Serbia wins, there will be a repeat of the group stage match. Then the Serbian team defeated Greece 3:0 (25:22, 25:13, 25:18).
The historic quarterfinal for Greece is on September 2nd in Brno.
