Alessandro Michieletto is getting closer to returning to play, but the final decision will be made after a medical examination in the first days of September. This was revealed by the coach of world champion Italy, Ferdinando De Giorgi, after the dramatic 3:2 (64:66, 25:22, 23:25, 25:22, 15:12) victory over Germany in the "Azzurri's" first match of the FIPAV Cup Men Elite.
Michieletto's condition is one of the big question marks surrounding Italy's preparation for EuroVolley 2026. The star outside hitter continues his recovery after a prolonged absence from the court and has not yet received final clearance to return to full competitive activity.
After the match against Germany, De Giorgi provided optimistic information but emphasized that the medical examination in early September would be crucial.
"Michieletto is doing well. However, he needs to get clearance after an examination he will undergo in the first days of September, which will be decisive," De Giorgi stated.
The coach also revealed that Michieletto's physical condition is very good and his desire to return to the court is immense. However, the Italian staff has no intention of rushing his recovery before the doctors give the green light.
"Physically, he has never been so well and has an immense desire. But we have to wait for this examination, we cannot rush the deadlines. He is with us, training what he is allowed to, and is potentially ready," De Giorgi added.
Michieletto is part of Italy's squad for the FIPAV Cup Men Elite. De Giorgi included him among the 14 volleyball players for the camp and tournament, but the outside hitter did not play against Germany and was listed among the unused players.
Italy continues its preparation with two more serious tests. On August 28, the world champions will face Cuba in Messina, and on August 30, they will play against Brazil. These are the "Azzurri's" last friendly matches before the European Championship.
After the tournament, De Giorgi plans five more days of work in Florence, during which the team needs to finalize the last details before EuroVolley. It is during this period that it is expected to become clear whether Michieletto will receive the necessary medical clearance for a full return.
There is little time until the start of the European Championship. Italy begins its participation in EuroVolley on September 10 in Naples, and the decisive examination in the first days of the month will answer one of the most important questions for De Giorgi – whether he will be able to count on Michieletto for the championship.
