Six months pregnant, a setter made history in Brazilian volleyball

Setter Pri Heldes had a historic season with Fluminense in the Brazilian Women's Superliga 2024/25. She wrote an unforgettable page not only with her athletic achievements, but also with the unique fact that she played until the quarterfinals of the championship, beingsix months pregnant. Her team was eliminated by Sesi Bauru.

Photos of Heldes on the court, with a visibly enlarged belly, quickly went viral on social media and attracted attention far beyond the world of volleyball. With her achievement, she joined a small but significant group of sportswomen who continued to compete during pregnancy, including Paula Pequeno, Elisângela, Isabel Salgado, Tandara, Fabiola, and Karine Guerra.

Health and medical clearance

"I am healthy and I feel very good," Heldes herself shared with Marie Claire. "As soon as I found out I was pregnant, I sought medical help. I am monitored by a professional who has experience with athletes and has authorized me to play, with some precautions, of course."

Support from the club and teammates

A key factor in her decision to continue playing was the support she received at the club: "Ever since I announced my pregnancy, everyone has embraced me warmly. The support from Fluminense and my staff gave me the confidence to continue playing." She emphasized how important this security was: "Fluminense gave me security and peace of mind. I could work disciplined, without fears. If I had the slightest discomfort, I knew I could speak openly and seek the best solution."

Overcoming taboos

Despite her positive experience, Heldes admits that she was initially afraid: "I was afraid because there are still many taboos in our environment. Some athletes were fired or had to file lawsuits against clubs after becoming pregnant. Sports culture is changing, slowly, but it is changing."

The Future: Motherhood and Return to the Court

Now, after the end of the season for Fluminense, Pri Heldes' thoughts are entirely focused on her future son, Emanuel. "I will dedicate myself entirely to him. I want to maintain an active pregnancy, I can't stand still, but all my energies will be for him."

She looks to the future with excitement and is already keeping memories for her son: "I saved videos and photos from the matches to show him one day: 'Look, you were playing volleyball with me even before you were born.'" Her plans also include returning to the court after maternity leave: "After maternity leave, I will return to the court. I want my son to see me play, to work, to do what I love."
