Congratulations on the cup, Alex! How do you feel right now?
Thank you! I feel incredible. We won a gold medal, and I can't describe this emotion. It's only going to get stronger!
This is your first title with Lublin, but it's not the only one...
With Lublin – yes, this is the first. But in Monza, we won the CEV Cup, so this is my second medal from a European tournament. I hope to record a third for a complete collection!
The match was special, as you played against a teammate from the national team. How did it feel?
Certainly, the match had a different charge when there were Bulgarians on the other side of the net. Most of all, I'm glad that in recent years I don't recall a European tournament final with two Bulgarians playing against each other. The last time was Plamen Konstantinov against Matey Kaziyski, but that was a completely different generation.
How do you feel in Poland?
I feel good. The championship is tough – there are 16 teams (next year they will be reduced to 14, editor's note), unlike Italy, where there are 12. Lots of travel, plus the European tournament we won. But the playoffs and the Polish Cup are still ahead – we are in the final four in that.
You are a middle blocker, which makes it difficult to get into individual rankings, but lately you've been among the best. How do you achieve this?
I focus on my work. I give my maximum in every match. Rankings are a result of this work, so I don't follow them much, but I know I'm there and I hope to stay.
The Nations League and the World Championship are coming up. Do you have a chance for a better ranking?
Yes, I think we can. The staff and management are giving their all. Coach Blengini is making very positive changes. I hope we can match forces with the best in the world.
Do you follow the performances of other Bulgarians in Europe?
Yes, though not 100%. I watch the matches of Grottazzolina, where there are two Bulgarians. Of course, Alex Nikolov – I've watched many of his matches with Lube, it's understandable (laughs). Martin Atanasov and I are close friends, and I follow his performances in Turkey as well. We support each other.
Rado Parapunov is also in Poland.
Yes, Rado is in Poland. This is a big step for him. We've talked, and I'm happy he's in a strong team. Even if he's a second opposite hitter, he can learn and develop for the future.
As captain of the national team, do you expect new additions to the squad?
Certainly! We have European vice-champions among the juniors. Many boys are progressing and will soon be in the men's national team. Finally, we want to win something and unite the nation for at least one day!
Is the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics the big goal?
Yes, and it's not that far off – three years is a short time! We have a lot of work to do.
I wish you success in the championship and the Polish Cup! As for us, Bulgarians, the hope remains that you will bring your successes to the national team.
Thank you! I will give it my all!
