Melissa Vargas solidified her status as one of the best volleyball players in the world after being selected as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 2026 Volleyball Nations League. Turkey's opposite hitter played a crucial role in her team winning their second title in the tournament, shining precisely in the most important matches of the final phase.
In the quarterfinal against Canada, Vargas scored 27 points and led Turkey to a 3:1 victory. In the semifinal against China, she added another 23 points, and in the final against Brazil, she was unstoppable with 33 points for the 3:1 win (23:25, 25:23, 26:24, 25:21). Thus, in the three elimination phase matches, she recorded a total of 83 points, averaging 27.7 per match.
Interestingly, Vargas did not finish the tournament as the top scorer. That spot went to Canada's Kiera Van Ryk with 298 points compared to 293 for the Turkish star. However, Canada was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Turkey, and Van Ryk did not get the chance to increase her tally in the semifinals and final. Vargas, on the other hand, was the leader of the champions in the decisive matches, which logically earned her the MVP award.
Furthermore, the opposite hitter topped the ranking of the best attackers in VNL 2026 with 260 attack points and a 53.28% success rate (260 successful attacks from 488 attempts). She also finished the tournament with 22 aces and 11 successful blocks, ranking third among servers.

Although she finished five points behind Kira Van Ryk in the scorers' ranking, Vargas was the most influential player in the decisive phase of the tournament. A total of 83 points in the three elimination matches, her leadership role in winning the title, and the top spot among attackers made her selection as the VNL 2026 Most Valuable Player entirely justified.
