Belgian international Sam Deroo has officially become a new signing for Halkbank for the 2026/27 season. Thus, the outside hitter, whom many in Bulgaria refer to as "the Bulgarian son-in-law," will be part of the team led by former Bulgaria coach Radostin Stoychev, which already includes legend Matey Kaziyski and current national player Denislav Bardarov.
Deroo has a strong connection with Bulgaria, as he lives with former national player Dobriana Rabadzhieva. The two have a daughter.
For the Belgian, this will be a new challenge, as he played for Russian Lokomotiv (Novosibirsk) in the second half of last season. There he worked under the guidance of another former Bulgaria coach " Plamen Konstantinov, and his setter was national player Simeon (Moni) Nikolov.
Halkbank announced the transfer with an official statement, in which they highlighted Deroo's rich international career.
"Halkbank's men's volleyball team has reached an agreement with Belgian outside hitter Sam Deroo as part of the squad selection for the new season. The experienced player has played in some of the strongest European leagues and clubs, and his accumulated international experience at both club and national levels makes him an extremely valuable addition. We are convinced that with his qualities and experience, Sam Deroo will contribute significantly to the team's successes. We wish him a successful season in the blue and white kit and welcome him to the Halkbank family," wrote the Turkish giant.
With Deroo's signing, Halkbank solidifies its serious ambitions for the new season. In addition to the Bulgarian connection in the coaching staff and the squad, the team also boasts one of the most experienced outside hitters in European volleyball, who has a rich profile in both the Champions League and with the Belgian national team.
