Long Beach State took sweet revenge against UCLA, winning with3:1 (25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 25-22)in a rematch of last season's final, when the Bruins triumphed with the title after the same score. This time, however, Moni Nikolov and his teammates were uncompromising and won the first clash between the two teams for the season. Three Long Beach players finished with over 10 points - Skyler Varga (12), Daniil Hershtynovich (10) and Sotiris Siapanis (8).
Moni Nikolovwas once again the conductor of the Beach's attack, finishing the match with35 assists, 7 aces!, 2 blocks and a total of 13 points. The Bulgarian talent demonstrated excellent precision and composure in key moments, diversifying the attacks and maintaining high speed in his team's game.
Nikolov is already a proven leader, and this match showed why he is considered one of the best young setters in the NCAA.He is number 1 in the country in aces per game (1.04)andis among the best in assists and defense, which makes him invaluable to Long Beach.
Middle blockerLazar Buchkovalso distinguished himself with a very stable game. He scored8 points with 44% attacking efficiency (5/9)and wasa key factor in defense with 3 successful blocks. His performance at the net was essential for the victory, especially against UCLA's powerful attack.
The victory at Long Beach became even more special, asMoni's parents were present in the hall - the legendary Bulgarian volleyball player Vladimir Nikolov and his mother Maya, who specially came to support their son. The excitement was enormous, and Moni repaid them with an impressive performance.
After this success, the two teams will meet againon February 12, when UCLA will host and seek revenge in front of their home crowd. Whether Nikolov and Long Beach will manage to solidify their superiority remains to be seen.
