Burgas has taken another important step in its bid to host a tournament of the Men's Volleyball Nations League in 2027. The Municipal Council of the seaside city unanimously supported the proposal to apply, and the next step is the official presentation of the candidacy to the Bulgarian Volleyball Federation. After successfully organizing the tournament in 2025, Burgas will once again try to attract one of the most prestigious events in world volleyball. Former national setter and current municipal councilor Ivan Stanev described the potential hosting as an investment in sports, tourism, and the local economy. He also recalled the atmosphere during the 2025 tournament when thousands of spectators filled "Arena Burgas" and together sang the national anthem in support of the Bulgarian team. The local parliament's decision gives a green light to the procedure but does not mean that Burgas will be the Bulgarian candidate before the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB). As the president of the Bulgarian Volleyball Federation, Lyubomir Ganev, stated toVolleyWeek during the first Volleyball Nations League tournament in Brazil, a total of five cities have expressed interest in hosting in 2027 – Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, and Ruse. According to him, each municipality must guarantee the fulfillment of all organizational and financial requirements, after which the Bulgarian Volleyball Federation will choose which city to propose as an official candidacy to the FIVB. Ganev also recalled that there are five halls in Bulgaria that meet the conditions for such an event – "Arena 8888 Sofia", "Kolodruma" in Plovdiv, "Arena Burgas", the Palace of Culture and Sports in Varna, and "Arena Ruse". During the discussion in the Municipal Council, the results of the 2025 competition were also recalled. According to the presented data, the tournament brought over 4 million euros in direct revenue for the city and the region, more than 30,000 spectators attended the matches in "Arena Burgas", over 18,000 overnight stays were realized, and the television audience exceeded 9 million viewers worldwide. It was also noted that the organization of the tournament received high praise from both the International Volleyball Federation and the Bulgarian Volleyball Federation, which is among the main arguments for Burgas to re-enter the race for hosting. Following the Municipal Council's decision, the application process continues, and the Bulgarian Volleyball Federation is expected to choose which city will represent the country in the bid to host the Volleyball Nations League in 2027.
